About Our Information

Because nomenclature and classification may vary from one source to another, we use the USDA Plants Database as our standard.

All the plant information on our site is gathered following a rigorous process of cross referencing to ensure its accuracy. However, it should not be considered academic research. Errors or omissions may occur. We will welcome any contributions or corrections that are backed with reference material. These may be sent to us at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . Thanks!

All other non-referenced information can be added directly to the species pages as comments.

About Our Catalog

Izel Plants only features species native to North America. No introduced species. No hybrids.

We began our collection with plants native to the mid-Atlantic. We are quickly adding more and will soon have plants native coast to coast... so come visit us regularly. Also, keep in mind that some species have large native ranges, so even if you're not interested in the mid-Atlantic, we already have plants that are native to every State. Check us out, you might find something that tickles your fancy.

Our advanced and intuitive search filters help you determine the following:
*Which plants are best suited for the conditions particular to a specific spot in the garden.
* Which plants are native to your geographic area, accurate to the county level. We have also developed a unique map search feature that will allow you to click on any point on the US map and find out what species are native to that particular point.

Trying to identify a plant you saw in the wild? Enter as many characteristics of the plant as you can, including environmental characteristics and geographic location, and we will identify that species so long as it is in our data base.

Who is Izel

This site is the brainchild of  two people: Claudio Vazquez and Amanda McClean.

Claudio: Grew up in the French countryside outside Geneva, Switzerland. He studied photography at the Corcoran School of Art in Washington DC and has lived there ever since. He worked for 20 years as a fine art, editorial and commercial photographer. It was while photographing at Speedling, one of the worlds largest producers of containerized transplants, and spending time with their botanists and horticulturalists, that he first began to think about the possibility of personally getting involved with the nursery industry and in particular native plants. The rest has been ten years in the making!

Amanda: Growing up in the DC suburbs she was surrounded by huge green lawns and candy colored azaleas. After buying her first house she became interested in different approaches to gardening. She was fascinated by the concept of xeriscaping and that one should be environmentally responsible, even in a small garden. She became a strong believer in the advantages of growing native plants and was amazed by their variety and by how few of them were available. When Claudio first mentioned his idea for Izel, she got so excited she immediately started designing the website, only later thinking to ask: "By the way...do you want a partner?".

About Our Name

Our name and logo are Nahuatl (nah-what). Nahuatl, used by the Aztecs, is one the oldest written languages “native” to North America. Its origin dates back to the 5th century AD and was used from central Mexico to the southwestern United States.

Izel means 'unique'. The logo is based on the pictograph Xochitl (so-chill), which means 'flower'. The two combine to create... you get the picture.

About Our Plants

Izel Plants is not a nursery and does not grow its own plants. We work closely with respected and established nurseries that specialize in native plants and that meet our high standards for quality and sound environmental practices. When you place your order, Izel determines how to fulfill that order using nurseries that are closest to you. This cuts down on shipping cost and time. This also provides you with a plant grown in an environment similar to your own, reducing transplant trauma and ensuring the plant's viability.

Enchanter's Garden

Peter Heus opened Enchanter’s Garden in 1994. His vast experience with plants began in the 70’s when he purchased an old homestead near the historic railroad town of Hinton, WV, situated in a hollow that drains into the Greenbrier River (the longest un-dammed river on the East Coast). Peter spent a lot of time as a homesteader wandering around the hills of his property and surrounding counties learning what was out there, and what grew where. He began to experiment with propagation techniques and will only sell plants that are grown form seed, divisions or cuttings.

Peter is widely recognized for his observations and knowledge of plants and forest ecology. His sense of humor, unpredictable opinions, and vast knowledge of indigenous plants make him a popular speaker at conferences and horticultural clubs. If you are interested in inviting him to speak somewhere, please give him a call!

Gardens of the Blue Ridge

Garden’s of The Blue Ridge is now in the 108th year of a family owned business, operating as North Carolina's oldest licensed Nursery. It was originally known as Highland's Nursery, established by Mr. S.T. Kelsey who came to the Linville area from Highlands, N.C. After working with the Kelsey family for a number of years, E.C. Robbins bought the Nursery and named it Gardens of The Blue Ridge.

Robyn has worked in the business for a total of 18 years, learning every part of the business from his grandfather. Paul and Katy, his parents, support him in his every effort to carry on the family tradition.

Today Garden’s of The Blue ridge continues to supply quality wildflowers and native plants to customers in the U.S. and around the world. They also carry an impressive collection of terrestrial, hardy, native orchids which are exclusively propagated by division.

Environmental Concern

EC_vendor_image_Spartina_patens_Greenhouseuntitled

Located on San Domingo Creek, in St. Michaels MD, Environmental Concern Inc. is a 501(c) 3 not for profit dedicated to the restoration of wetlands.  Founded by Dr. Edgar Garbisch in 1972, EC continues its legacy as the first native wetland plant nursery in the country.  Starting with only one glass greenhouse, Dr. Garbisch developed propagation protocols for tidal plants that at the time could not be sourced commercially.  Today, EC propagates over 120 species of wetland plants for restoration and home projects alike.  Their nursery manager Leslie Hunter-Cario has been with the company for 12 years ensuring that the legacy of quality wetland plants is carried on.

Although devoted to wetlands, EC does propagate some upland material which can be used in rain gardens and planting beds alike.  They strive to grow their material from locally collected seed and if this is not possible, they source what they can from the mid-Atlantic region to help ensure the survival of local ecotypes.
