Description

Adiantum pedatum

Also known as:

northern maidenhair

,

maidenhair fern

,

maidenhair

Scientific Synonyms:

Description

The northern maidenhair is a delicate and extremely attractive fern. Reaching only about 20" in height, it will form graceful clumps of foliage on black stems so thin they seem to disappear against the background.

Cultivation

Elegant red fiddleheads will appear in spring. These ferns will stay green until fall so long as they are not exposed to direct sun, nor allowed to dry out. This plant is ideal for protected northern exposures. Under best light and soil conditions, the maidenhair will colonize by thin rhizomes as well as spores. Zones 3-8

Propagation

It is easiest to propagate by division of mature clumps in early spring while the plant is still producing fiddleheads. May also be propagated by spores in late fall.

Additional Notes

Tea has been made from the leaves of Adiantum pedatum to alleviate coughing
