Description Schizachyrium scoparium 'The Blues' is a clumping, upright, highly ornamental grass. The key characteristics that differentiate it from the parent species, are enhanced bluish hues in the foliage, and pronounced purplish culms (flowering stems) and bloom color. As with the straight species, you can expect a stunning fall show when the plant turns to shades of gold and red. It typically grows to a height of 12 to 24", and up to 36" or more when in bloom.
Cultivation Easy to grow under harsh conditions. Too much shade, moisture, and overly fertile soils can cause the plant to get leggy and flop over.
Additional Notes Schizachyrium scoparium 'The Blues', is a selection that was made by Kurt Bluemel from seedlings of yet another cultivar, 'Aldous' and named by Dale Hendricks of North Creek Nurseries.
Note: Early spring shipments might include plants that have not yet broken dormancy, or have not been vernalized and will be frost-tender. Please use your best judgment when selecting your preferred ship week.
