Sorghastrum nutans 'Indian Steel' is a tall, clumping, warm season grass with an open form. This selection provides more reliably blue-green and slivery-blue foliage as compared to the parent species. Plants typically top off at 5' when in seed. Its golden fall color and persistent bronze seed panicles, extend its visual interest well into winter.
'Indian Steel' is easy to grow, yet non-aggressive. The straight species was once the dominant species of tall grass prairies, and is among our most ornamental native grasses. It adapts well to poor soil, and dry conditions. Overly fertile and moist soil, can encourage the plants to grow excessively tall which will lead them to have a tendency to flop.
Sorghastrum nutans 'Indian Steel' was introduced by Jelitto Perennial Seeds in 1995.
