Description

Asplenium resiliens is similar to A. platyneuron, but for the distinctly black stems, to which it owes the common name 'blackstem spleenwort'. The individual fronds are typically 12" long, but can occasionally grow to 18". The leaves are leathery, and geen to blue-green in color.

Cultivation

Blackstem spleenwort is widely distributed in the US, from the desert states, eastward to the mid-Atlantic region but can be rare within its range. It can be found in xeric as well as mesic woodlands. It is often found growing in rocky crags, and is very tolerant of poor, lean soils. It is quite adaptable, but a strong emphasis must be put on adequate drainage. Drought and heat-tolerant, and fairly cold hardy. Zones 5-9

Additional Notes

The contrast between the black stems and the blueish foliage, make this a truly admirable fern. It performs remarkably well in stone walls, where the growing conditions mimic those of its natural habitat.
