Description

Carex rosea

Also known as:

rosy sedge

,

Scientific Synonyms:

Carex convoluta, Carex flaccidula, Carex rosea var. pusilla

Description

Carex rosea is a low-growing, fine textured sedge. The leaves are deep green, semi-evergreen, about 1/12" wide and 12" long. It has a rounded form, with the foliage remaining erect in the center of the clump, and gently arching toward the outside. It produces delicate star-shaped seed heads in late spring, that seem to float above the foliage.

Cultivation

Rosy sedge is a trouble-free, versatile sedge that is found growing in woodland lowlands, margins and clearings. It is well adapted to the mesic conditions of deciduous forests, with moist springs under filtered light and dry summers in full shade, but is also remarkably tolerant of soil that is poorly drained and remains saturated throughout the year. It creates an excellent ground cover for dry shade when planted en masse, or can be grown as a specimen that provides textural contrast for other shade loving perennials. With a fibrous and short-rhizomatous root system, this is a well-behaved species that retains its mounded form over time. A 'haicut' late winter before new growth emerges will help preserve a neat appearance. Zones 3-9

Propagation

This is a slow growing species that is best propagated by division, but can also be propagated from seed.

Additional Notes

This species is similar in appearance to C. appalachica, C. pensylvanica, and C. radiata, but more tolerant of wet conditions.
