Description

Chamaelirium luteum has basal foliage, which will remain all year in the milder climates. In summer, 3 feet tall stalks are topped with a wand-like spike of white flowers. This species is dioecious, meaning that male and female flowers are on separate plants. Both are equally attractive. The male flower is slightly larger and has a yellowish tint.

Cultivation

A woodland native, blazing star will grow in a variety of soil and light conditions, making it a beautifully delicate addition to any garden. Bloom time may vary from March in the south to June in the north. Zones 5-8

Propagation

Propagate from seed, or by root division in spring or fall.

Additional Notes

The herb is considered an emetic, tonic, diuretic and vermifuge. The root has been said to normalize uterine function in women and increase fertility in both sexes. All parts of the plant may be considered toxic in large quantities.
