Description

Eutrochium fistulosum is an impressive plant commonly growing to a height of 7' and occasionally reaching 10' or more. The 8" to 10" long lanceate leaves grow in whorls along the erect, dark green to deep purple stems of the plant. It produces large, 6" to 14", clusters of pink to lavender colored flowers.

Cultivation

Give this species of Joe-Pye weed room to grow because its width can be equally as impressive as its height. It thrives in plenty of sun, in soil that remains consistently moist. It will even withstand occasional flooding. An attention getting plant that can be used as a background for pond or stream margins. Under ideal conditions it will produce rhizomes and form small colonies. Bloom times are from July through September. Zones 5-9

Propagation

Propagate by root division of mature clumps in spring when the first new shoots appear or in fall when the plant goes dormant. May also be propagated by softwood cuttings or from cold stratified seeds.

Additional Notes

The nectar rich flowers will attract a great variety of pollinators. A dramatic plant that will accentuate any large water feature.
