flax-leaved aster

Scientific Synonyms:

Aster linariifolius, Aster linariifolius var. victorinii

Description

Ionactis linariifolius is a clump-forming, compact aster with stiff, erect stems that typically do not exceed a height of 1 1/2'. The leaves are, opposite, needle-like, with a prominent central vein. Each stem will bear a small terminal cluster of 1" daisy-like flowers with pale purplish rays, and a bright yellow disk the color of which intensifies to orange and red as the flower matures. These give way to fluffy achenes that will carry the seeds in the wind.

Cultivation

Ionactis linariifolius is a drought tolerant species that prefers well-drained, rocky or sandy, neutral to slightly acidic soil. It is tolerant of bright, filtered light, but does best in full sun. Ideal for use in rock gardens and dry borders. The bloom period lasts about a month, from late summer to mid-fall. Zones 3-8

Propagation

Easy to propagate by seed, without pre-treatment. The fibrous root system allows for easy division in spring.
