Description

The fragrant flowers of the dwarf violet iris bloom singly or in pairs, on short stalks before the narrow grass-like leaves appear. The sepals have an orange-yellow band at the base. This is one of the smallest members of the Iris family, growing no more than 8" tall.

Cultivation

Iris verna var. smalliana can be found growing in the dry open woods and shaded barrens of the Southern Appalachian and Piedmont. It is well suited for shade and rock gardens. The vernal iris should be grown in acidic, dry to moist soil. It blooms in April or May. Zones 6-8

Propagation

Propagate by division in late spring after flowering.

Additional Notes

Iris verna var. smalliana closely resembles Iris verna var. verna, which is native to the coastal plains of the Southern Atlantic States. The first can be easily distinguished by its growing habit which is clumping, while the latter will form loose colonies.
