Description

The blue flag iris has striking light blue to deep violet, rarely white flowers, with a yellow band at the base. When planted in groups, its green, sword-like leaves provide strong ornamental interest. This is a tall species of Iris reaching 3' when grown under ideal conditions.

Cultivation

Marshes, wet pinelands, swamps, and wet meadows are the native habitats of this species. Iris virginica will grow best in wet to boggy, sandy, acidic soil and will even tolerate having its roots under water for protracted periods of time. Under optimal growing conditions, it will spread to form lose colonies. Blooms May, June. Zones 4-9

Propagation

Propagate by division in early fall. If propagating by seed, sow immediately outside. Collected seeds quickly lose their viability.

Additional Notes

Though the Iris virginica loves having "wet feet", it will do very well in a flower bed that is kept consistently moist. Dryer conditions will reduce the height of the plant.
