Description

Tall blazing star is a low growing Liatris, rarely reaching more than 3'. The fluffy pink to purple flower clusters appear on hairy erect stems. The basal leaves are narrow and very rough, hence the name aspera which means rough in Latin.

Cultivation

Native to dry meadows and open prairies, Liatris aspera is drought tolerant and grows in poor, well drained, sandy or even rocky soil. It should not be planted were the soil will remain consistently wet during winter. A late summer bloomer, August to October. Zones 4-8

Propagation

Best propagated from seed. They may be collected and stored, but will required cold stratification and scarification before sowing. Mature clumps may be divided in early spring.

Additional Notes

Tall blazing star is ideal for dry perennial borders where its flowers will attract hummingbirds and butterflies. The flowering stems may be used in cut flower arrangements.
