Description

Liatris scariosa var. nieuwlandii is taller and has larger flowers than the straight species. The fluffy pink to purple flower clusters appear on smooth, erect stems that can grow to a height of 5'.

Cultivation

Nieuwland's blazing star, also known as savanna blazingstar, will thrive in average to poor soil so long as it is very well drained. It provides an eye catching addition to any moist to dry perennial border where it can take advantage of full sun. It is an exceptional species for use in meadows, prairies and other naturalized areas. If planted in overly fertile soil, it can have a tendency to grow too tall and flop over under the weight of its flowers. It is more tolerant of partial sun than the straight species. The blooming period lasts about 1 1/2 months, from July through September. Zones 4-8

Additional Notes

This species can be susceptible to browsing mammals.
