Description

Potentilla arguta is a prairie wildflower of the Rose family, that usually grows to a height of 30", though it can reach 4' under ideal conditions. The lime-green leaves are primarily basal. They are compound and covered with fine hairs that are somewhat sticky. A few sparse leaves will emerge along the stout, central stem of the plant which is also covered with fine hairs. Flowers are mainly borne in dense terminal clusters, with a few smaller groupings along the side of the stem. Each consists of 5 creamy-white petals, and 20 or more yellow stamens surrounding a yellow center. They are reminiscent of strawberry flowers, or those of wild roses.

Cultivation

Tall cinquefoil is native to mesic and dry prairies. It is easy to grow and disease free. It is not particular about soil type, so long at is well drained. Once established, plants are tolerant of rather dry conditions. It can be used in a rock garden , cottage garden, or sunny perennial border. It is a very cold-hardy species. Zones 3-7

Propagation

Newly collected seeds should be sown in late fall. Stored seeds will require a period of cold stratification before spring planting.
