Rhododendron flammeum

Also known as:

Piedmont azalea

Oconee azalea

Scientific Synonyms:

Azalea speciosa, Rhododendron speciosum

Rhododendron flammeum is a deciduous azalea with an open form that can grow to a height of 8'. The flowers are stunning, forming dense clusters in vivid hues ranging from orange to bright-red, hence the specific epithet 'flammeum' that means 'flame-like'.

Piedmont azalea is one of the most heat-tolerant native azaleas. It does not tolerate direct sunlight and prefers open shade or filtered light. It requires moist, acidic soil rich in organic material and good drainage. It does not tolerate wet feet. The root system is fibrous and shallow, therefore it is not recommended to cultivate around them. Maintaining a layer of mulch or leaf mold around the plants' base will help maintain adequate levels of moisture, as well as acidify and enrich the soil. Zones 6-8
