Description

Sparganium americanum is a freshwater wetland species with grass-like characteristics. The foliage consists of erect, blade-like leaves that resemble those of cattails but are shorter, rarely reaching a height of 3'. Conspicuous spherical white flower clusters are borne at the nodes of zigzagging stems. As they ripen, the seeds become a valuable food source for birds and other critters.

Cultivation

American bur-reed is an aquatic, emergent plant. It thrives in shallow water with a permanent inundation of up to 6". It prefers sunny locations but is somewhat tolerant of moderate shade. The root system is rhizomatous and quick to establish, forming dense colonies. Sparganium americanum is very effective in stabilizing muddy shorelines and filtering runoff. Zones 3-9
