Description

Verbesina alternifolia

Also known as:

wingstem

,

yellow ironweed

Scientific Synonyms:

Actinomeris alternifolia, Ridan alternifolia

Description

Verbesina alternifolia grows to impressive heights: easily reaching 8', and sometimes up to 12'. The stems are rigid and don't require additional support. It produces abundant, yellow sunflower-like flowers in late summer through mid-fall, when few other perennials are in bloom.

Cultivation

Verbesina alternifolia does best in moist soil and filtered light. It is often found along woodland and stream margins, where adequate moisture can be ensured. It is also adaptable to sunnier and drier locations, but this can lead to the deterioration of its lower leaves.
