Solidago rigida ssp. humilis is a shorter, more compact subspecies of stiff goldenrod. The cultivar 'Golden Rockets' introduced by Jelitto Seed carries that petite habit, tightly spaced foliage, and bright yellow flower display. The individual flowers are quite large for a goldenrod and are held aloft in dense heads on sturdy stems. The subspecies occurs naturally in dry to moist soils that are often sandy, in prairies and open meadows, pastures, and in open grassy clearings in woods. 'Golden Rockets' adapts to poor soils and will grow happily in average garden conditions. This is a charming addition for that sunny spot that needs a pop of fall color. Like other goldenrods, this is a pollinator fave!
The species is one of the most widely adaptable of the goldenrods, from dry sand to heavy clay. Tolerates dry conditions and poor soils and is highly salt tolerant, making it a good candidate for streetside plantings where road salts are spread. Flowers best in full sun.
Space plants 2'-3' on center.
'Golden Rockets' spreads somewhat slowly (for a goldenrod) via rhizomes and may re-seed. With a mature spread of around 2', space closer for dense coverage and further for a more open planting.
The botanical name for the parent of 'Golden Rockets' is contested, so you may also see it listed as Oligoneuron rigidum ssp. humile and Oligoneuron rigidum var. humile.
